Abstract

Fishing is a traditional activity with deep roots in Italian coastal communities. It provides healthy food and contributes significantly to local economies. In recent decades, the fisheries development model, based on increasing the fishing effort, has demonstrated its inherent limitations. Consequently, the sector has been compelled to embark upon a process of profound transformation, driven mainly by the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). This contribution presents the main issues characterising the current situation of Italian fisheries within the framework of rules of the European Union and the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean. Subsequently, a number of key factors are analysed to support a new development strategy for the sector that takes into account the increasing necessity for sustainability and resilience, while also considering the ongoing effects of climate change and the competition from emerging countries on the southern shore of the Mediterranean.
