Abstract

This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Marine Citizen Science (MCS) project "Monitoraggio Vermocane" (MV) in gathering reliable data on the distribution and ecology of the stinging polychaete Hermodice carunculata. From May to November 2021, a Facebook page and an Instagram profile were used to engage the public, provide precise data collection instructions, and communicate results. The study focused on central-southern Italy, particularly the Tyrrhenian coast, involving 35 diving centers. The main contributors were men aged 45-54, primarily divers. Posts about human-fireworm interaction and participation guidelines generated the most interest. A total of 249 reports confirmed the fireworm's expansion along the Tyrrhenian coast up to northern Tuscany. Compared to previous studies, continuous public interaction through social networks provided more additional information (size, depth, temperature) and new insights into the fireworm diet and reproduction. The strengths of the MV project can be applied to design similar MCS projects.
