Abstract

One of the main threats for aquaculture is represented by microbial pathogens, causing mass mortality episodes in mollusk hatcheries. Among the many disinfection methods applied to reduce this issue, use of chemicals and probiotics seems to be efficient. In this study we tested two methods: a chemical, Paracetic Acid (PAA), and a probiotic, Phaeobacter inhibens. Analyses were carried out on microalgae culture of Isochrisys galbana (var. T-ISO). Both remedies were tested in different concentrations, to obtain an optimal breakdown of the pathogens, without harm the algae culture. Experimental trials were conducted in laboratory scale and inside photobioreactors (PBRs). PAA showed no harmful effect on algae cultures, and treatment that gave the best results involved the chemical dosed with a concentration of 60 µg/L, in laboratory and PBRs scale. Probiotic treatment dosed with a concentration of 104 cfu/ml showed no harmful effect also. These preliminary results show the potential efficacy of the two tested methods.
